TWO DOGS and A SURFBOARD
If you believe in Karma then you’ll love this story.
I was living in Hawaii when things started to fall into place. If you have ever been to Oahu, and specifically Waikiki, then you will certainly recognize the above picture. Yes, these are the surfboard racks located just between Honolulu’s original Hotel, the Moana Surfrider, and the famous statue of Duke Kahanamoku.
Thanks to a good friend of mine, I was able to store my 9’0 Sakal surfboard in one of the surf lockers, making a day of surfing at Waikiki a snap. What wasn’t a snap was being by myself and the challenges that arose when trying to take off or put back on my surfboard day bag, known as “the Sock”. I found that I was either scaring my fin or tail on the ground or bruising my inner thighs trying to balance the board while pulling this huge piece of material the length of my 9’0 waxy board. At times a group of us would be surfing together, allowing for two or even four extra hands to put the sock on, pulling, balancing, pulling, pulling, then pulling right side, left side then right side again and so on. But even that wasn’t the answer.
One day I looked at the racks more closely to see what other options I might have to protect my board. I wasn’t the only frustrated surfer. Others had sewn Mexican blankets or sheets together in an attempt at a logical solution. Sometimes I saw sweatshirts or even raincoat material patchworked together in an attempt to protect their most prized possession. This is when I decided that surfers deserve to have a less frustrating, affordable alternative day bag, one that is easy to use by oneself. Thus, the invention of “The Original Zippered Sock” the “ZOK”. I took my existing Sock and made a prototype of what I would want as a consumer to make my surfing experience more enjoyable. I showed a few of my surfing friends who loved my idea, and all said “it’s about time”.
Unfortunately the timing wasn’t right to put this idea into motion, and I put “The Zok” on the shelf. Three years later I moved to the mainland and met Bob at the local dog park. We started meeting every morning to let our dogs, Emmett and Monty, play together, and we all became very close friends. Bob, who had lots of experience building businesses and investing, said he needed a new and exciting project and I shared with him the story of my Zok. He loved the idea, said this is it sounded like a no brainer, and a partnership was born. Since then, we have been diligently working on making the best day bag on the market, one that is completely user friendly, attractive, and affordable for the surfing and SUP community.
So, thanks to two dogs and a surfboard, we are thrilled to introduce to you “ZOKsurf”. With its ease of use, it’s all weather durable Zipper, a lining to protect the board, interior mesh pockets, and extra space for slippers, sun glasses, keys, hat or wax, the “ZOK” will change the way you start and end your day at the beach. Taking only seconds to zip on by yourself, the “Zok” assures your time is spent enjoying more of your day at the beach. And, always remember after a hard day of surfing “the faster you zip it, the sooner you can sip it”.
Cheers!
